Why was the Khalifa University of Science and Technology established through a merger of three existing UAE universities?
The merger between the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MI), the Petroleum Institute (PI) and the Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research to form the Khalifa University of Science and Technology, was intended to consolidate the resources and infrastructure of three of the most respected academic institutions in the UAE and the Middle East. The resulting unified University reinforces Abu Dhabi’s and the UAE’s commitment to pursuing the development of world-class research and human capital initiatives.

What is the structure of the new university?
The Khalifa University of Science and Technology is an independent entity with its own Board of Trustees that is accountable to the Government of Abu Dhabi for its charter.

Will the MIT certificate previously provided to Masdar Institute graduates continue to be provided at the Khalifa University of Science and Technology?
For existing students graduating in the 2016-2017 academic year, the MIT Certificate of Achievement is being granted as it has been previously. Discussions with MIT are ongoing to understand what role they will play in the new Khalifa University of Science and Technology.

Is the education at the Khalifa University of Science and Technology co-ed or segregated?
At the Khalifa University of Science and Technology, all new students at both the undergraduate and graduate level will study in a gender-integrated environment. At the PI, current students will be able to complete their programs under the preexisting segregated educational arrangement.

Is education at the Khalifa University of Science and Technology for UAE Nationals only, or are international applicants also accepted?
The University celebrates diversity and welcomes both UAE National and international applicants.

What does the new unified University campus entail?
The new unified Khalifa University of Science and Technology has three campuses - a main campus and two satellite campuses in Sas Al Nakhl and Masdar City. The campuses include:

  • Over 250,000 square meters in covered unit space.
  • Multi-cultural environment with vibrant and rich student life.
  • Over 20,000 square meters of dedicated laboratory and research space.
  • 12 dedicated research centers exploring a diverse range of energy, water, aerospace and information and communication technology challenges.
  • Over 50 central laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment investigating subjects ranging from artificial intelligence and robotics to clean energy, hydrocarbons and aerospace.
  • 3 major demonstration facilities for solar energy, sustainable buildings and bioenergy.

Are scholarships available for students?
Tuition waivers and stipend support are provided for undergraduate and graduate UAE nationals, but only limited tuition waivers are provided for undergraduate international students. What is the accreditation status of the Khalifa University of Science and Technology’s programs?
All academic programs at the University are accredited with the CAA of the UAE Ministry of Education and ABET accreditation for the new programs is underway.

Does the Khalifa University of Science and Technology conduct entrance exams prior to admitting students?
All applicants who meet the minimum requirements must pass an entrance exam in mathematics (algebra and precalculus) math and physics admission tests. This does not apply to those who are eligible for Exemption from Entry Assessment.

Do I need to take an English language proficiency test?
The language of instruction at the Khalifa University of Science and Technology is English and as such, all applicants must demonstrate their proficiency in English. Most applicants can satisfy this requirement by passing an English-based language test such as the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the International Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet-based test (iBT).  

Potential students who have not met the minimum required score in an English proficiency test are required to sit an English language admission test. The purpose of this test is to determine the level of English course in which the student will be placed.
