Bio

Dr. Saif Almheiri joined Masdar Institute as an Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Materials Engineering in August of 2013. In 2014, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Electrochemical Energy Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he worked on energy storage solutions. Prior to joining Masdar Institute, Dr. Almheiri was an Assistant Professor at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Since joining Masdar Institute Dr. Almheiri has been active in several initiatives. He helped to develop the GCC’s first graduate level space technology and systems concentration. His dedication to accelerating the development of electrochemical storage and conversion technologies in the UAE prompted him to initiate Masdar Institute’s first electrochemical engineering lab, called the Innovative Laboratory for Electrochemical Engineering (or Electrochem). His interest in advancing the Institute’s technological capabilities in energy storage earned him the recent appointment as principal contact for the Masdar Institute collaboration with the Korean Basic Science Institute, which was established in 2015 in order to jointly study cutting-edge research in energy storage systems and nanotechnology. Additionally, Dr. Almheiri is participating in building the Electric Energy Storage Solutions Hub (EESSH) to enhance the capabilities of Masdar and Masdar Institute regarding testing and service facilitation of secondary battery storage systems.

Dr. Almheiri holds a BSc degree from the University of Arizona and MSc and PhD degrees from the University of Miami, all in Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Almheiri is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Electrochemical Society (ECS) and the American Chemical Society (ACS). He is the recipient of Rashid Award for Scientific Outstanding in 2014 and Young Emirati Researchers Prize (YERP) - National Research Foundation in 2015. As a proud Emirati, he is motivated to actively participate in exploring alternative sources of energy to sustain Abu Dhabi’s economic and social development.
