Dr. Ali earned his doctorate in mechanical power engineering on a channel program between the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA and the University of Helwan ̶ Cairo Egypt. He received his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in mechanical power engineering from the University of Helwan, Cairo, Egypt. Prior to joining the Masdar Institute, Dr. Ali was a senior lecturer and research scientist faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Kentucky ̶ Lexington, Kentucky, USA, where he worked since 1999. Prior to University of Kentucky, Dr. Ali was a tenured faculty at the University of Helwan since 1997.
During his sabbatical and summer leaves from the University, Dr. Ali also held visiting faculty appointments at the University of Kentucky and visiting research scholar at the University of Michigan, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and South East Center for Aluminum Technology (SECAT).
Dr. Ali specializes in broad area of combustion and thermal-fluid sciences. His main expertise is in the fields of fire and flames, internal combustion engines, industrial furnaces and burners, power plants, water desalination, PEM fuel cell, combustion acoustics, nanofluids for energy storage and heat pipe, and emission control. His research and consulting work have been supported by several grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Energy, UK Center of Aluminum Technology, UK Energy Research Center, and a wide range of Aluminum Companies in the USA. Recently, he has a recognized achievement with EMAL (Emirates Aluminium Company) through his current projects in collaboration with the aluminum industries in UAE. He has been actively involved in many professional organizations including ASME, TMS, SAE and the Combustion Institute.
