Bio

Dr. Mohamed Shawky received his BSc and MSc degrees in Electrical Engineering from Mansoura University, Egypt, in 1997 and 2002 respectively. He received his PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick (UNB), New Brunswick, Canada, in 2005. Dr. Shawky worked as a designer engineer for photovoltaic systems (1997-1998) for an agent of Siemens (ASET Company). He joined Mansoura University as research and teaching assistant in the Electrical Engineering Department and was involved in consultant activities with external companies (1998-2002). Dr. Shawky has also worked as a research and teaching assistant in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the UNB, Canada (2002-2005). He joined McGill University as a postdoctoral fellow in the power electronics group. He joined Vestas Wind Systems in 2006, where he worked in technology R&D in the Wind Power Plant Group, Arhus, Denmark, till 2009. He was awarded the Expert and Key Employee benefits in Denmark after the assessment and evaluation from the Danish Innovation Counsel and recommendation from Vestas Wind Systems A/S in Denmark. He later worked at Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority, TRANSCO, as senior study and planning engineer and was seconded to assistant professor at Mansoura University. 

Dr. Shawky is currently an associate professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at Masdar Institute and visiting professor at MIT, Cambridge, MA, USA.  He was conferred the Faculty Award for Excellence in Collaborative Research (Academic Year 2012-2013) in recognition of research achievements as interdisciplinary faculty at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, Abu Dhabi, UAE.  

Dr. Shawky is currently an Editor of IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER DELIVERY, Editor of IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER SYSTEMS, Associate Editor of IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER ELECTRONICS, Guest Editor of IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ENERGY CONVERSION, Regional Editor for IET Renewable Power Generation and Associate Editor for IET Power Electronics Journals. His research interests include power system, power electronics, FACTS technologies, VSC-HVDC systems, microgrid operation and control, renewable energy systems (wind and PV) integration and interconnections.
