Dr. Kumar is a faculty member of Mechanical Engineering Program at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology. He has research interests in the area of mechanics of advanced materials and structures at different length scales. He obtained his PhD in Solid Mechanics and Materials Engineering from the Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford and an MPhil in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering from the University of Southampton. He also received another master’s from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and attended graduate school at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras. He was a visiting Mechanics of Solids & Materials Lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology from Dec 2011 – Jan 2013. He held a Post-doctoral position in the Materials Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara prior to joining the Masdar Institute. Dr. S Kumar held several R&D positions (including a Scientist post in an aero-engine defense R&D lab) spanning about a decade, working on computational modeling and design of materials & structures, before heading to the UK. He is a senior member of AIAA and is an active member of ASME, SAA UK and MRS India.
He won several awards including EPSRC award at Oxford and Rolls-Royce/DTI Fellowship at Southampton. He has an impressive record of publications in peer reviewed international journals. Kumar is a regular reviewer of several international journals and is currently editing a book on ‘Advances in modeling and design of adhesively bonded systems’ jointly published by Scrivener and John & Wiley. He also serves on the editorial advisory board of the Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology (USA) and the Journal of Multifunctional Composites (USA).
