Dr Viegas received his BSc and MSc in Optoelectronics and Lasers from the University of Porto, Portugal in 2000 and 2003 respectively. During 2000-2004, he taught diverse physics courses at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, Vila Real, Portugal. In May 2010 he received his PhD degree in Physics from the University of Porto, researching integrated optical sensors for chemical monitoring. During 2006-2008, he was a visiting researcher at the new micro-optics fabrication laboratories of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, USA.
